In art, 3rd graders started a unit titled: Animal Studies. We discussed point ot view and how it affects what you see and don't see. After picking a favorite animal, they looked up photos of their animal. They had to pick 3 different points of view (top, side, front, back) to include in their drawings. This lesson helps the students with the next lesson in the unit, creating an animal in clay. Having drawn their animal from different views helps them sculpt the animal in 3D more realistically.

Art class: More drawings of "things I do with my family," inspired by the paintings of Carmen Lomas Garza. Examples here include bowling, swimming, and fishing.

In art we are getting ready to make clay sculptures with guest artist, Selena Medellin next week. We learned about family celebrations and traditions through the paintings of Carmen Lomas Garza. Students then drew pictures of their own family celebrations and traditions.

Recently, Mass Media 7 students have had a few special guest speakers. They spent time with Carson Hughes from the St. Peter Herald and Le Sueur County News, Jake Palmer with Radio Mankato, and Hannah Yang from MPR. Students learned about media careers, bias, the FCC, ethics, and the difference between public and private media.

Today in art, students in grades K thru 5 started an all school relief sculpture. Studying will work cooperatively - each person creating a piece that will go together to make the whole relief sculpture. Each student selected a monochromatic color scheme, then picked the forms they would use. By the end of Thursday we will have 370 pieces to assemble into a large sculpture. Collaboration and cooperative work are important as children learn how to work with others...an important life skill for the adult workforce. It also helps students learn from one another, to be creative as ideas from one person influence another, and to create a larger work of art by working together.
